Chimpanzee trekking and habituation in Congo

For many years, gorilla trekking has been the driving force of every traveler heading to Democratic Republic Of Congo, however the existence of other primate have today been recognized including Chimpanzees and Golden monkeys. Chimpanzee tracking and habituation is yet another experience, that every traveler will automatically include it in his/her bucket list. Therefor it is  so important to enjoy equal and marvelous experiences  offered when tracking or habituating the chimpanzees .

Today Chimpanzee tracking / habituation adventure is one of the top things to do in Democratic Republic of Congo, that is second to the gorilla trek. The chimpanzee tracking in Congo takes place in Tongo Forest ,in Virunga National Park, in the  Rumangabo region – a mountain forest that is said to have existed for years  protecting a huge biodiversity, with many species existing  in the forest.  Tongo Forest mostly known for it lasrge number of habituated chimpanzees – man’s closest relatives. Tongo Forest  has more chimps, offering one of the best chances to see chimps in the wild.

Chimpanzee Habituation in Congo

The trackers leave for tracking at exactly 6:00am, after the guides who will have left at 4:30 am in search of chimpanzees. Each chimpanzee habituated group is limited to only for trackers. Just like  gorilla trekking and chimp tracking in Uganda and Rwanda,  chimp trackers at Tongo Forest are allowed to spend at most an hour in the presence of the chimpanzees, after then the tracker will be required to get back to their hotels/lodges.

  1. All guests at Mikeno lodge are allowed to track chimps at Tongo forest at no cost. Chimp Habituation bookings are only made at Mikeno Lodge.

What to Wear during Chimpanzee tracking

  • Two liters of water
  • Clothing
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • A hat
  • Light rain jacket
  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • Long trousers
  • Insect repellent
  • Binoculars among others
